The course is designed to teach the student a variety of important topics in strength of materials. Due to its emphasis on general and not too specialized approach, the course is applicable to the majority of students majoring in mechanical or engineering fields. The course assumes that the student has a good background of general physics. A clear understanding of statics and mechanics of materials is assumed. The major topics of the course include strength of materials, failure criteria and experimental methods, elasticity, creep, dynamic behavior, plasticity, failure modes, strength design, fracture mechanics, etc. COURSE DESCRIPTION. The course consists of one three hour, mid-term examination, one fifteen minute written examination and a final paper examination. A presentation is given in the first session, and consists of an overview of the field of strength of materials, materials behavior at high temperatures, a review of the effects of strain rate, temperature and deformation mode on material behavior and a review of the effects of loading, stress intensity factors and plastic zones on material behavior. In the second session, an overview of failure modes is presented and the major failure criteria are presented. For the third session, a review of the experimental methods, the effects of strain rate and temperature on material behavior, the effects of temperature on creep and stress relaxation are presented. In the fourth session, the effects of loading and plastic zones on material behavior are presented. For the fifth session, an overview of the effects of loading, stress intensity factors, ductility and fracture on material behavior is presented. For the sixth session, a review of the effect of grain size on material behavior and failure is presented. The seventh session covers failure modes. For the eighth session, an overview of the effects of temperature on creep and stress relaxation and the effects of creep on material behavior is presented. The ninth session covers other thermodynamics effects, such as thermal expansion and thermal conductivity, on material behavior. The tenth session covers the effects of grain size on thermal conductivity. The eleventh session covers plasticity and creep. The twelfth session covers the formation of a plastic zone and the mechanical behavior of plastic zones. The thirteenth session covers the influence of stress intensity factors on material behavior. The fourteenth session covers the effect of temperature and strain rate on plastic flow. The fifteenth session covers the effect of
